ALA.NI + Adrian Younge Release Video For “Lament for Emmett Till” (Amazon Original)

Image
Today, ALA.NI released her video for the Adrian Younge-produced single “ Lament for Emmett Till ” (Amazon Original). The video was directed by ALA.NI and animated by RUFFMERCY, known for his music video work for Run The Jewels, Thom Yorke, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, and many more. The achingly-beautiful song was originally released on August 28th to memorialize the 65th anniversary of Till’s death. In “Lament for Emmett Till," ALA.NI recites a 1955 poem of the same name by the radical activist, journalist and organizer Claudia Jones over Adrian Younge’s lush, cinematic production. NPR featured the song in “ We Insist: A Timeline Of Protest Music In 2020 ” and KCRW recently named it “ Today’s Top Tune .” The song is available to stream and purchase on Amazon Music. “The death of Emmett Till illuminates the expendability of black lives in America,” says Adrian Younge. “We must continue to highlight the atrocities that plague our system, this incident serving as a catalyst that

'The Godfather, Coda' tries to pull you back in by taking another whack at the trilogy's Fredo

Image
Thirty years after its release, "The Godfather: Part III" -- long dismissed as the Fredo of the trilogy -- becomes "The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone," as Francis Ford Coppola joins the long list of directors who have discovered that in the age of digital and streaming, nothing is ever really finished. Aside from the new title, which more closely reflects the tone that he and novelist/co-screenwriter Mario Puzo originally intended, Coppola has tinkered with the beginning and end, rearranging and editing some scenes. He has also trimmed 13 minutes from the movie, which still runs a characteristically epic two hours and 37 minutes. Receiving a limited theatrical run in advance of a digital and Blu-ray release, the modestly revised film can't fix everything that ailed the original, beginning with the casting of Sofia Coppola, the director's daughter, in a pivotal role; and the absence of Robert Duvall, who opted not to return as consilgiere Tom

‘French Exit’ Review: Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges Outshine a Sleepy Transatlantic Satire

Image
Frances Price has a problem. It’s not that she doesn’t have any friends, or that she’s wasted most of the 12 years since she’s been widowed, or that her adult son Malcolm is as much of a dilettante at 20-something as she is at 65 — all of those things are true, but they don’t seem to bother her very much (besides, Frances’ late and loaded husband appears to have reincarnated as a black cat she calls Small Frank). No, Frances’ problem is that an infamous socialite like her can’t afford to be poor. “My plan was to die before the money ran out,” she announces at the top of a low-key farce about her final adventure, “but I kept and keep on not dying, and here I am.” Death is always just a few dollars away in the wry and beguiling “French Exit,” a musty tragedy of manners that director Azazel Jacobs and his longtime friend/sometime collaborator Patrick DeWitt have adapted from the latter’s novel of the same name. For Frances — who a serrated Michelle Pfeiffer plays like an intoxicating cros

Chris Jack of The Routes ditches his fuzzy 60s psych-garage rippers to drop stunning solo-acoustic debut

Image
Mark E. Smith once said, “The Fall is me and your gran on bongos” (or something along those lines). Undergoing numerous member changes, Chris Jack has led The Routes for 14 years. The albums “In This Perfect Hell” and “Dirty Needles and Pins” could have been classified as solo albums, where the “band” was just Chris, and drummer Jonathan Hillhouse. On the last Routes album “Tune Out, Switch Off, Drop-In”, Chris was joined by English drummer and old friend Bryan Styles (with whom he briefly played in a post-rock band at age 18). Whilst working on the album, Chris was playing around with some acoustic song ideas. He sent demo recordings to a few friends. Action Weekend Records said “Let’s make an album!”, Bryan came in on drums, percussion and glockenspiel and “ Miles To Go” was born! What? No fuzz!? That’s right! Gone are the snotty vocals and fuzz guitars. There’s no garage here. Chris Jacks' acoustic compositions are accompanied by organ, Rhodes, melodeon, vibraphone and more. Alt

On The Record on HBO MAX

Image
A searing look at the intersectionality of the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements, ON THE RECORD presents the powerful and haunting story of music executive Drew Dixon as she grapples with her decision to become one of the first women of color, in the wake of #MeToo, to publicly accuse a music industry mogul of sexual misconduct.    Directed and produced by Academy Award-nominated and two-time Emmy-winning investigatory filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering (The Hunting Ground, The Invisible War), the documentary chronicles not only Dixon’s story but those of several other accusers – Sil Lai Abrams (a domestic violence awareness activist), Sheri Sher (an author and founding member of the first all female hip-hop group ‘Mercedes Ladies’) – delving into the ways women of colors’ voices are all too often silenced and ignored when they allege sexual assault and the cultural forces that pressure them to remain silent.
