Screen Talk 294: Streaming Platforms Dictate

Most summer movie seasons are filled with studio tentpoles and franchises galore. Of course, there’s nothing normal about this summer movie season, with virtually every major release postponed until later this year or 2021. Nevertheless, there are plenty of movies coming out on a regular basis — and all of the “big” releases are naturally coming from streaming platforms. This week alone, there’s a Tom Cruise WWII thriller (“Greyhound”) hitting Apple TV, a Netflix-produced action movie starring Charlize Theron (“The Old Guard”), and an Andy Samberg romcom coming to Hulu (“Palm Springs”). What does it mean when the summer movie season is dictated by streaming platforms?

In this week’s Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson debate each of these new release (as well as “Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets,” also in out this week). Separately, they touch on ongoing questions surrounding fall film festival circuit, and close by saluting two significant film figures who passed away this week: Ennio Morricone and Kevin Rafferty.

ALA.NI + Adrian Younge Release Video For “Lament for Emmett Till” (Amazon Original)

Today, ALA.NI released her video for the Adrian Younge-produced single “ Lament for Emmett Till ” (Amazon Original). The video was directed by ALA.NI and animated by RUFFMERCY, known for his music video work for Run The Jewels, Thom Yorke, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, and many more. The achingly-beautiful song was originally released on August 28th to memorialize the 65th anniversary of Till’s death. In “Lament for Emmett Till," ALA.NI recites a 1955 poem of the same name by the radical activist, journalist and organizer Claudia Jones over Adrian Younge’s lush, cinematic production.
