Chris Jack of The Routes ditches his fuzzy 60s psych-garage rippers to drop stunning solo-acoustic debut

Image
Mark E. Smith once said, “The Fall is me and your gran on bongos” (or something along those lines). Undergoing numerous member changes, Chris Jack has led The Routes for 14 years. The albums “In This Perfect Hell” and “Dirty Needles and Pins” could have been classified as solo albums, where the “band” was just Chris, and drummer Jonathan Hillhouse. On the last Routes album “Tune Out, Switch Off, Drop-In”, Chris was joined by English drummer and old friend Bryan Styles (with whom he briefly played in a post-rock band at age 18). Whilst working on the album, Chris was playing around with some acoustic song ideas. He sent demo recordings to a few friends. Action Weekend Records said “Let’s make an album!”, Bryan came in on drums, percussion and glockenspiel and “ Miles To Go” was born! What? No fuzz!? That’s right! Gone are the snotty vocals and fuzz guitars. There’s no garage here. Chris Jacks' acoustic compositions are accompanied by organ, Rhodes, melodeon, vibraphone and more. Alt...

Yet another stunning single from Henriette Sennenvaldt ✨

Image
Our latest signing has a new track for you! Henriette Sennenvaldt of the widely acclaimed Danish band Under Byen has released 'Clumsy' , the second single of her upcoming debut solo album, Something Wonderful . Following the New York Times review of her debut single, 'New Skill' , Sennenvaldt has given us 'Clumsy'; an exploration of repetition, confusion, and ecstasy. Sennenvaldt explains, "I travelled to Chicago and spent days walking about the city, looking at life in a different place. I saw a work by Spencer Finch in which a solar-powered ice cream truck served cones the colors of the sunset. I saw a photo series by Carrie Schneider in which a house keeps burning over the course of several seasons. I wanted this song to be shaped like waking up from the same dream several times. Repetitive, but not repetitive enough for you to relax, quiet but noisy at the same time, like not knowing which reality to put your money on. The saxophones of the song are ...

Son Zept mutates rave aesthetics with ‘Trophy Run’

Image
Digital artist Dervla Hillan plunges into a technicolor ravescape of undulating organisms and virtual architecture. While Belfast producer Liam McCartan, aka Son Zept, may draw his influences from the rich history of the hardcore continuum, his intricate, genre-exploding club constructions transport the listener so far past his house, techno and electroacoustic touchstones you’ll be left scratching your head, trying to work out just where it was he started in the first place. “I think these tracks all really come from starting within general rave aesthetics in mind, but then some tracks go so far away from that starting point that it’s barely audible”, explains McCartan. “I was just thinking about the different sound palettes that light up a certain genre in your head when you hear it. But then I wanted to fuck with that ‘lighting up’ quite a bit but not destroy the form of what I’m doing.” ‘Trophy Run’ is a perfect example of this. Starting with the radioactive bones of hardcore an...

Image
“Don’t Forget to Remember Me”, the new single/video from engaging young Austin based Singer/Songwriter Emma Pierson , is available on Spotify , YouTube and all the other major services Friday August 28th 2020. The song, co-written and produced by Emma alongside fellow students at Stages Music Arts in Maryland where she grew up, invites the listener to recall a time when someone they loved moved away, or when they themselves had to move away from their loved ones; as Emma was experiencing personally at the time during her move to Austin, TX last year. Usually regarded as a sad moment, the situation could conversely be seen as a hopeful time to take a look back at the amazing memories that were created together, making a pact to stay in touch and stay just as close friends as before - despite the geographic challenges you will now face. The message in Don’t Forget to Remember Me is also made especially relevant in the time of the COVID 19 pandemic, where social distancing an...

"An American Lie" Music Video by Rory D'Lasnow

Image
Rory D'lasnow shared a powerful new video/single entitled "An American Lie", apropos of all the civil unrest we are experiencing. It is available on YouTube , Spotify , and all major streaming services. The video emphasizes the disconnect between civil rights and civil justice, using documentary style footage alongside himself in the studio. He believes it is our duty to right any cultural wrongs, and uses the visual and audio medium to bring home this point. D'Lasnow acknowledges the struggle and resulting advances, best he feels. We are all experiencing the shock and dismay at the injustices we are bombarded with daily, but few stand up to remedy it. "An American Lie" is both gripping and sensitive, truly a paradox of emotions after spending the past two years as an opening act for various artists. D'Lasnow was inspired by Black Lives Matter to create an essential musical cocktail of empathy, frustration, and unfettered hope. The song ...

How Streaming Platforms Are Dictating the Summer Movie Season

Image
Most summer movie seasons are filled with studio tentpoles and franchises galore. Of course, there’s nothing normal about this summer movie season, with virtually every major release postponed until later this year or 2021. Nevertheless, there are plenty of movies coming out on a regular basis — and all of the “big” releases are naturally coming from streaming platforms. This week alone, there’s a Tom Cruise WWII thriller (“Greyhound”) hitting Apple TV, a Netflix-produced action movie starring Charlize Theron (“The Old Guard”), and an Andy Samberg romcom coming to Hulu (“Palm Springs”). What does it mean when the summer movie season is dictated by streaming platforms? In this week’s Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson debate each of these new release (as well as “Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets,” also in out this week). Separately, they touch on ongoing questions surrounding fall film festival circuit, and close by saluting two significant film figures who passed away this week: ...

Botz writes songs about hard times, a good woman, and sheer life through the bottle. "Maggie" features a rocking backup band with 'Red Rhodes' pedal steel and a ripping guitar solo. Actor/Producer Linda Collins - A Woman of Substance

Image
Linda Collins , actress and producer runs the gamut from heart-warming pathos and family drama, to eerily, pitch-perfect family terror. Her films have competed in the Hells Kitchen Film Festival, Omaha Latino Film Festival, Portland Comedy Film Festival and Brighton Tavern Short Film Festival. Her latest project, "Perceptions" showcases the contemporary and relevant problems of immigration, as seen by disparate families. Collins plays the matriarch of the American family who espouses white supremacy, contrasting with the Honduran family. Finding no solace in wanton self-destruction, she garnered praise and/or disdain simultaneously, she honed her acting skills at the T. Schreiber Studio in New York. Adding to her accomplishments, Collins is also an acclaimed musician, appeared with symphonies, musicals, and ballet companies. These talents have lead her to a varied and inspiring career in many venues. Word of mouth is crucial for a performer in the arts, and I t...

Playwright Joe Beck Bringing Unique and Gripping Drama “Our Lady of Queens” Starring Austin Pendleton to Cinema Arts Center

Image
Playwright Joe Beck's newest production "Our Lady of Queens" will be premiered Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Cinema Arts Center in Huntington and will be followed by a Q and A session. He has introduced us to middle-class Irish catholic family, enmeshed in complex and heart-wrenching problems. The deeper the audience gets in the play, the less they'll be able to forget this seemingly ordinary group. Becks exquisite dialogue creates a narrative that few plays possess anymore: humor, pathos and relevance. He intermingles these characteristics with wit and intelligence, the wreckage of the family dynamic and the hopes of correcting it is truly inspiring, it is evocative of John Van Druten "I Remember Mama". The trick in finding a solution is that, sometimes, we surprise ourselves and discover just what is really important we are all inexorably tied to each other and the cycle of life. WHAT: Premiere of Our Lady of Queens, a new production by accom...
